Sexual Assault
Victim Witness Advocates are helpful to victims of sexual assault in many ways. Advocates assist and support sexual assault victims through each step of the criminal justice process. Advocates notify sexual assault victims or their families of important court dates and important information, i.e. : Bail, Grand Jury, Arraignments, Bail Information, Pretrial Hearings, Pleas, Trials, Sentencings and information regarding incarceration. In cases when a charge is not going to be brought, the advocate can discuss this decision with the victim. Advocates assist victims in completing Victim Compensation Applications so that they can get financial assistance with medical bills and counseling expenses and, in some cases, lost wages. Advocates discuss victim concerns with the prosecutor assigned to the criminal case, assist the victim in writing and speaking before the Court at sentencing, and refer victims to community based Sexual Assault Services and Advocates. Please ask your advocate for help locating the nearest community based services near you.
